BBB advice for installing new windows or replacement windows
The two big questions you’ll have to answer are “what types of windows do I want?” and “what are the window installation options near me?”
Types of windows
The first step in deciding what type of windows you want is identifying what kind of windows you currently have. Then, decide if you want to replace them with the same type of windows or change them to something new. Note that this decision will affect how complicated the installation is. A professional window installer can help you make the decision.
Some common types of windows include:
Double-hung windows: these classic windows open from the top and the bottom. They can sometimes also tilt inward for easier cleaning.
Single-hung windows: these look similar to the double-hung windows but, only open from the bottom – not the top.
Casement windows: these are hinged from the side and are opened and closed with a crank.
Sliding windows: these open and close horizontally by sliding past each other in a track.
Picture windows and accent windows don’t open but provide views and let in light.
Once you decide the type of window you want, you’ll need to think about the material that window is made of – such as wood, vinyl, or aluminum. Consider asking a professional window installer for advice on which material will work the best for you, and which one will be the most energy-efficient choice.
Installing the windows
If you don’t know how to install windows yourself, make sure you research to find the best option for someone to replace your windows.
There are several options to explore for window installation – including an installer who comes from a window dealer, an installer hired through a big box store, and a local contractor. Check our listings above for window installation companies near you.
No matter which route you go, here are some important steps to take when looking for someone to install your windows:
- Get at least three bids – preferably from people who will come on-site to do the estimates. A visit to your home will help ensure the estimate takes into account things like the state of your window frames. Make sure you get the bids in writing and that they include materials and labor. Try to get a bid for labor for the entire project rather than an hourly cost.
- Check each company on BBB.org for BBB Accreditation status, reviews and complaints.
- Be clear from the start about who will dispose of the old windows and clean up any messes and debris from the work.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
