More information on travel agencies
Although you can book travel through apps and websites, many people prefer to have a travel expert on their side as they plan a trip. A good travel agent is an expert on travel destinations and can help you book an amazing trip while sticking to a budget.
Travel agencies offer three main services:
- Expertise on destinations. Travel agents can help you discover the perfect places to stay, eat, shop, and tour in the city you plan to visit. Once they know what you hope to get out of your trip, they may even suggest a few alternative destinations. These options can offer the same attractions, but at a lower price.
- Travel deals. A professional travel agent takes advantage of supplier relationships to leverage the best travel deals. Some travel agencies specialize in specific places (i.e. South America) or travel packages, such as cruise vacations in Europe.
- Emergency assistance. If your luggage gets lost, a hotel is overbooked, a natural disaster strikes, or another unexpected event threatens to wreck your vacation, your travel agent will be your advocate. They will help you get your vacation back on track by helping you navigate the situation and minimize the inconveniences.
Before you hire a travel agent
Plan ahead before you speak with a travel agent. Know where you want to vacation, what kind of activities you are interested in, and what you can spend for the trip. Most travel agents will want to get to know your travel preferences right away. In addition, they will ask you about your budget up front. This helps them put together the best possible vacation within your budget.
How to find a great travel agency
Ask for travel agent referrals from your friends and family. Check out any agent that really went the extra mile to help them enjoy their trip. Consider interviewing a few different travel agents and select one who understands your travel style and makes you feel comfortable.
Look for certification as you interview candidates. For example, if the agent is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents or another reputable organization. If they are affiliated with a large organization like AAA, that’s also a good sign.
Unless you are looking for an agent with a specialized niche, choose a local travel agent, so you can speak with them face-to-face. Even if your agent has great expertise and deals, be sure to inquire about how they will help you through any travel emergencies that arise. There’s no substitute for knowing your travel agent personally as this is the person you will be contacting if anything goes awry during your trip. If they won’t help out if you run into trouble, look for another agent.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
