More information on pet boarding
Pet boarding facilities host many dogs and cats at the same time. The kennel staff care for each pet’s needs by feeding them, cleaning the kennels, and exercising them. Some veterinary clinics offer boarding as well, a good fit for cats or dogs with specialized health needs.
What to ask before you book a pet hotel
Ask your veterinarian and pet-owning friends where they board their cat or dog when they go on vacation. Once you have a few reputable options, visit each pet boarding facility in person. Take note of the cleanliness and the attitude of pets currently being boarded.
When you find a place to board your cat or dog that ticks all the boxes, why not give them a dry run? Let them care for your pet overnight or for a weekend and see how your pet reacts.
When visiting a pet hotel, the following questions will help you decide whether or not to board your cat or dog there:
- How long has the kennel been in business boarding pets?
- Are you licensed and insured?
- Do you have references new clients can contact?
- What is the cost of your services?
- How far in advance should I book your services?
- Will my cat or dog be in a temperature-controlled environment?
- How often will my cat or dog be fed, played with, and exercised?
- Will my pet be around other animals? If so, will their interactions be supervised?
- What are your requirements for vaccinations?
- Are you qualified to handle special needs pets?
- What happens in case of an emergency?
- What are your cancellation and pick-up policies?
Pet boarding red flags
There are a few tell-tale signs that a kennel isn’t offering the best service. Keep an eye out for the following red flags. If you notice any, find another place to board your dog or cat.
What to notice when visiting a boarding facility:
- Pets appear dirty and stressed.
- There is a bad smell.
- Requirements for vaccinations are lax.
- There are poor reviews or no reviews for the facility online.
- Outdoor areas are not properly fenced and secured and pet waste hasn’t been picked up.
- There are many boarders but not enough staff to care for them all.
- They don’t have the proper business licenses and aren’t insured.
