Decks vs. patios
Although they are very similar in terms of use, decks and patios are completely different structures. Before you begin to build a patio, stop and consider if a deck would be better suited for your home or vice versa. Deck and patio contractors will be able to help you decide which structure you really need. Be sure to factor in these deck vs. patio differences as you start planning.
- Foundation: A deck is supported and built above ground level. A patio's foundation is the ground.
- Cost: Because a deck requires the additional support materials, it will generally cost more than a patio.
- Weight restrictions: Decks have weight limits. Patios do not. Consult with a deck and patio contractor about any weight limit concerns. Often, they will be able to expand the size of the deck or use a sturdier material to increase the weight limit.
- Privacy: Decks have less privacy and are often visible from street level. However, a deck will offer a better view than a patio.
Do I need a permit to build a patio or deck?
As you start planning, you may wonder if you need to apply for a permit before you build a patio or deck. However, only one of these structures requires a permit. Depending on the region in which you live, you may need to get a permit before building a deck. In many areas, an inspection is required upon completion to be certain the structure is safe.
- Patios do not require a permit because the structure is built directly onto the ground. Patios do not run the risk of collapsing.
- Decks may require a permit because the structure is build above the ground level and there is risk of injury if it is not properly constructed.
Check with your local zoning office to determine if you need to apply for a permit for your new deck. Patio and deck builders will often apply for the permit and schedule the inspection on your behalf.
The importance of hiring a licensed builder
When you are looking to build a patio or deck, you will first want to consider the materials being used and how those materials will appear in addition to your home. Patio and deck builders will be quick to point out that both structures require the use of different materials. Each material comes with its own pros and cons.
- Decks are commonly constructed out of a combination of the following: wood, composite, plastic, and aluminum.
- Patios are commonly constructed from concrete, stone, brick, gravel, and occasionally wood.
Decks require more material than a patio, yet patios often have less of a return on investment. Additionally, decks are more suited for areas over rough terrain. However, because wood and plastic are less resilient to the elements than concrete and stone, decks do not typically last as long as patios.
Often, people choose to construct either a deck or patio themselves only to discover the materials are too heavy. Professional patio and deck builders can provide the additional strength or machinery needed to maneuver.
